Description

As with her previous two CD’s, Laurinda sings the words of the most beautiful Afrikaans poems in her unique and novel way. Favourites at her shows such as Eugène Marais’s well-known Die dans van die reën and Fanie Olivier’s “last grave at dimbaza” can be heard on the CD. Breyten Breytenbach is clearly a poet who resonates with Laurinda. Six of his poems are used to explore musical horizons. Three of these are new compositions that have not yet been heard at her shows.

In contrast to Ligdag, only a handful of musicians have participated in this production. Laurinda and the musicians that usually perform with her, David Klassen (drums, percussion and backing vocals) and Schalk Joubert (bass, double bass, guitar and keyboards) are responsible for most of the sounds. Other musicians that contributed include Kevin Gibson (drums on track 2, 3 and 6), Zanta Hofmeyr (violin), Heather Burgess (flute), Melissa van der Spuy (backing vocals and accordion), Nicole Holm and Neo Muyanga (backing vocals).

With the help of old faithfuls, Schalk Joubert (producer) and Jürgen Von Wechmar (sound production and mixing), a unique sound has been captured on this CD that interprets the rhythm, space and meaning of the words .The listener is transported on a journey through familiar South African landscapes, but it is ultimately the hidden inner landscape that does not remain untouched.

The album is nominated for a SAMA in the category Best Alternative Afrikaans Album.
